Safe Sport

Basketball New Brunswick is committed to creating an environment for all participants that is free from all forms of maltreatment and abuse.

As part of that commitment we have created the following partnerships and policies meant provide education and awareness and to protect participants:

Responsible Coaching Movement
The Responsible Coaching Movement is a call to action for sport organizations, parents, and coaches to enact responsible coaching across Canada - on and off the court. The RCM is a multi-phase movement that affects all sport organizations and coaches across Canada. It stems from extensive and ongoing consultation with the sport community in Canada that showed us some of the systemic issues in sport, the role various parties play, and strategies for addressing these issues. The Coaching Association of Canada and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport support the Canadian sporting community in improving practices that ensure the health, safety and well-being of all participants.

Respect in Sport
The Respect in Sport Program educates youth leaders, coaches, officials, parents and participants (14-years and up) to recognize, understand and respond to issues of bullying, abuse, harassment and discrimination (BAHD). The Activity Leader and Parent Programs are the Safe Sport Canada solution! The Respect in Sport Program is an online certification program designed to protect our youth as well as enhance Alberta Basketball’s directive of providing a safe and fun environment for all of our participants. It is Canada’s leading online bullying, abuse, harassment, and negligence prevention program for parents, coaches, and community leaders. It is offered in two different streams:

Respect in Sport Parent Program
The Respect in Sport Parent Program will help define a standard of behaviour for all parents and create a more rewarding, safe and respectful environment for everyone involved. Parents want to do a great job supporting their kids. Respect in Sport provides parents with the tools to create and maintain Safe Sport environments. With over 1.25 Million people Respect Certified, we are the Safe Sport Canada Solution!

Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders & Coaches
The Respect in Sport Activity Leader/Coach Program educates youth leaders, coaches, officials and participants (14-years and up) to recognize, understand and respond to issues of bullying, abuse, harassment and discrimination (BAHD). Our Activity Leader and Parent Programs are the Safe Sport Canada solution!

Keeping Girls in Sport
Keeping Girls in Sport was created to help everyone who coaches girls, even parents, understand how girls develop physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally. When we understand how and why girls play we can help every young athlete stay in sport, reach their potential, and remain active long after the competitions end. Finally becoming the next generation of inspiring female coaches and role models.

NCCP Safe Sport Training
Creating a culture where everyone can thrive is a shared responsibility. The Safe Sport Training module developed by the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) will help anyone involved in sport identify and prevent situations of maltreatment. Together, we can make sport safe for everyone.

Basketball New Brunswick Participants are protected, and expected to abide by the following policies that complement our Safe Sport Policy:

Appeal Policy
Athlete Protection Guidelines
Code of Conduct and Ethics
Discipline and Complaints Policy
Dispute Resolution Policy
Event Discipline Procedure
Investigations Policy
Screening Policy
Social Media Policy
Whistleblower Policy

Finally, as active members of Sport New Brunswick, Basketball New Brunswick have partnered with SportNB, the Sport & Recreation Branch of the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture, and ITP Sport in the NB Safe Sport Dispute Resolution Program (NBSSDRP). The Program strives to provide support to a complainant within the New Brunswick amateur sport system for certain disputes by accessing an independent and unbiased third-party mechanism.

Basketball New Brunswick members can now submit Complaints of Maltreatment as defined in the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport (UCCMS) through WhistleBlower Security Inc., a secure and independent reporting intake and case management system. This multilingual (150 languages) phone line and secure online platform is available to members 24/7/365, and ensures that all complaints are managed through independent expert consultation services.
